Commander's Corner

Time flies when you are having fun!
Posted on 9/24/2024

Ha! It's been a quick 14 years since the last Commander's Corner update. Where does the time go? Things have improved around the camp site since then. We have a couple more trailers, a wood stove on the deck, and just recently some new handrails for the steps. The installation of a wood stove on the deck has been a game-changer. It not only keeps us warm during chilly evenings but also adds a cozy, rustic charm to our gatherings. Safety has been a priority, and the new handrails for the steps are a testament to that. They make it easier and safer for everyone to navigate the campsite, especially for those who might need a bit more support.

On the shooting front, the Revolver team has been performing admirably over the past few years. We even secured the overall high score at the Spring Regional—much to our surprise and that of the rest of the region. Our team’s dedication and practice (or dumb luck) paid off, and it was a proud moment for all of us. We also occasionally manage to snag a medal in Carbine. These events are always thrilling, with participants showcasing their precision and skill. Never count us out.

As more of us retire, it should become easier to field full teams, provided folks don’t get too busy with other, non-shooting activities. The camaraderie and spirit of competition keep us coming back, and we look forward to many more successful events in the future.

Where has the time gone?

Wow, it has been over 4 years since my last post. That just seems unbelievable. I really need to take a little time out to post the scores and a few comments and pictures from life at the Fort.

Things are going pretty well around the camp. Over the past several years we have a few new(er) trailers at the site. The pavilion is still in good shape, but of course needs some finishing touches. And we still don’t have a reliable mower or string trimmer.

We seem to always be right at the lower limit for team membership so keep an eye out for any new recruits. We have a lot to offer in the way of team spirit, fun shooting and of course room at the camp.

The team has been doing well and has collected some nice team medals recently. Not long ago the revolver team picked up a 1st place medal. At the 2010 Spring Potomac Regional the musket team won a 1st place medal. And the carbine team won a 2nd place medal at the Spring National.

And last but not least we have added 3 new young shooters to the team. Erik, Eliot & Billy have all moved up from BB to the real deal. We still have Chase in training and will support him in BB until he comes of age.

If team members have comments or announcements they would like posted here just send them along in an email.

Scores! For 2005 of course.

OK so it took me almost an entire year to get the scores posted (see link above). I'm sorry and I pledge to be a bit more timely in 2006. You can consider that my one and only New Years resolution. In 2005 Bill was a big force and posted our 2 top single event scores. Both on the dreaded pigeon board. Bill once again as gone against the grain of common sense and has been actually PRACTICING! Well if he doesn't watch it that might catch on and the rest of our scores will improve. I do wish everyone a great new year of shooting and much luck on the pigeon board, we need it. Keep your balls round and your powder dry!

Let's go 2006!

Let's get busy this year OK! We have have a little extra excitement scheduled for the Spring. We'll be hosting the Spring Potomac Regional. Dave Boyle has volunteered to be the the Skirmish Director and has our full support. OK, perhaps volunteered is a bit misleading. However, he didn't protest too much when he was railroaded into it :-). Dave is working on the skirmish schedule and I'll post it here and to the Chesapeake group when it is finished. Right now it looks like we'll have a work skirmish a few weeks before the work skirmish because of conflicts with the Chesapeake Regional.

Scores: I have to really apologize for not keeping up with the 2005 scores. I know we don't use the scores for team selection, but I'm sure everyone would like to know how they did and to be able to go back and see if they are improving. I will get all the 2005 score sheets posted and pretty soon now. I'm pretty sure I have all of them from the shoots I attended. If for some reason I don't make it to a skirmish please email me the scores and I'll add them to the table.

I think we are pretty much done with pavilion upgrades for awhile. If folks get ambitious we can look at finishing the railing, but that's about all I'd be up for this year. We need to take a break and focus on fielding some fun loving shooting teams and having some good times around the fire. Speaking of fire, I'd like to take a lead from Bill and get the fire pit back up and running. I'm looking at getting a metal fire ring that we can plop down in the grass. That way we can move it out of the way for mowing when we are not there. The wood stove is nice and all, but it's just not the same as an open fire and a clear view of the sky. We can talk about it at the next skirmish.

Cast those bullets, pack that powder and sight in those small arms! We are going to have some serious fun this year!!!
